The government plug-in grant was introduced to bolster consumer uptake of new electric or plug-in hybrid models by providing up to £4,500 off the list price. There are 6 categories of grants available, each grant is dependent on CO2 emissions and electric-only range.
Eligible Vehicles – Category 1 Cars
Category 1 cars are eligible for the highest grant available. This will cover 35% of the purchase price of the vehicle, up to a maximum of £4,500. To qualify for this the vehicle must have CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km and be able to travel at least 112km (70 miles) without any CO2 emissions at all.
Eligible Vehicles – Category 2 Cars
To be eligible for this grant vehicles must have CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km and be able to travel at least 16km (10 miles) without any CO2 emissions. The grant will cover 35% of the purchase price for these vehicles, up to a maximum of £2,500.
*Mercedes-Benz C350 e (with 17 inch rear wheels)
*Mitsubishi Outlander (except Commercial)
*Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine Momentum (2017 model year only)
Eligible Vehicles – Category 3 Cars
There is currently only one vehicle eligible for the Plug-In Grant:
Mercedes-Benz E350 e AMG Line
This vehicle has CO2 emissions of 50 to 75g/km and can travel at least 32km (20 miles) without any CO2 emissions. The grant will cover 35% of the purchase price for this vehicle, up to a maximum of £2,500.
Eligible Vehicles – Vans
The current government grant will pay for 20% of the purchase price of the below vans, up to a maximum of £8,000. To qualify, the van must emit CO2 emissions of less than 75g/km and be able to travel at least 16km (10 miles) without any CO2 emission.
Non-eligible – Vehicles
Not all electric or hybrid vehicles are eligible for the Plug-In Grant – only vehicles that have been approved by the government. Also, any category 2 or 3 cars with a retail price over £60,000 are not eligible.
